Topic: Staying Safe With Traveling – The Roofie Story
Waking up to your life!
STATEMENTS FROM THOSE WHOM THIS HAS AFFECTED:
“We were there beginning of May and I got hit with one. Not sure it was meant for me. Thinking it was meant for my girlfriend but I took the drink.”
“My girl and i got ghb put in our drinks at (Bar name) !!! When i tried to go to the bathroom i got locked out on the roof by some asshole … Some tourist opened the door for me 5 minutes later ! Managed to find my girl , got a cab and got back to our resort . Wonder what would’ve happened if i would’ve gotten stuck longer on the roof”
“The rohypnol? My symptoms were consistent with ecstasy symptoms , which is what I thought I may have been given.”
“Two years ago my husband swears something was put in my drink. And I’m being very serious”
“My first night at (resort) … Drank A few drinks then woke up vomiting in my bed At 5am…. my boyfriend said I just seemed drunk but I don’t remember nothing after the third drink… Lost 5 hours!!!! Complete black out! Good thing he was there to tell me what I did… He said i looked normal… Never felt so bad in my life…and never black-out before that especially after only 3 drinks! I suspected being drugged… And now you guys confirm it!!!”
“My brother got Roofied at a casino in (state) after winning a few jackpots on a machine… He and his family complained to management, they reviewed the tapes, and saw some guy who was a “person of interest.”
“I have heard of a couple friends think they were in the past. So I play it safe & use my Bubba mugs (assorted sizes) all the time. Never go lidless on a drink.”
“Been to (resort) 6 times and last year I was roofied. It’s a completely different feeling than being too drunk. It was early in the evening and I only had 3-4 drinks prior. It was hard for me to walk or move much at all. I had to spend the rest of the night in the room which sucked. I will be more aware this year.”
“I was. I was unconscious for 12 hours from noon to midnight. Had to be carried to my room from the booze cruise, don’t remember anything. My boyfriend thought i was gonna die. Seriously fucked up that trip”
“Mary & I were in (a coastal city) a few years ago, I am certain that someone tried to roofie her, but I drank her beverage. I don’t usually drink much after dinner but somehow could not find my way out of a 100 sq ft bathroom. Weird feeling!”
“It happened to me. My boyfriend or myself would get all our drinks… It is easy and fast to drug somebody… And i was raised to watch my drinks… It can happen to anybody … Me, it was at (location) the first night there!”
“Yup my wife and one of our friends did about 3 or 4 years ago neither had much to drink but both were completely messed up with not much memory of the night before”
“Yep not sure what happened last December on my first night, decided to have a 3rd & final drink before going back to my room and all the sudden felt myself going. Woke up the next morning with blackouts; remembered walking away from bar, but nothing afterwards. That drink was made in front of me then never left my hand. I can’t understand what it was, as I only had 3 drinks in the last 24 hours”.
“I read through the link describing this and now know this is exactly what happened to me, and I was kind of sick for 2 days afterwards (dizzy, nauseous). That is not a normal hangover at all, and I did not drink very much before having the problem. I also cannot remember anything for a few hours, and that never happens to me with normal drinking. I know something was ‘off'”
“My first year I think I may have been the one night because I completely had no memory of it and felt very strange I recall before I blacked out.”
“A few years back when I was in (Country) I was at a nightclub with a few friends. We just sat down. I didn’t even have a drink in me yet. This really attractive man came up to me and asked me to join him at the bar for a drink. I ordered my favorite drink and then I just blacked out. Well my eyes opened and I had 2 guys on either side of me walking me out of the club with a car in front and 2 guys in the car. I grabbed a palm tree and started yelling as they were trying to pry my hands off the tree and bring me in the car. This guy came up and rescued me. I am a strong girl I have a black belt and I travel all the time. So now I am extremely aware of my drink at all times it doesn’t matter where I go. I bring my drink to the dance floor with me or I get a friend to watch the drinks. Never say never because it could happen to you and I never thought it would happen to me. I am very fortunate to have opened my eyes when I did because if I didn’t I probably wouldn’t be here today telling this story.”
“I was last year. It’s sad, because we were only at two bars that night, and both were regular places we visit and the bartenders know us. My wife and I never set our drinks down so I’m still dumbfounded as to how it happened but I basically passed out about two hours after we got out and was completely out of it the next day until about 2 o’clock. I honestly think someone put it in the drink intended for my wife but there’s no way to prove any of it.”
“I believe it happens more frequently but people just believe that their drinks hit them extra hard that night for some reason. That’s what I initially thought, until later the next day when I realized I hadn’t drank enough to cause the reaction I had, also I had ordered a regular cola, and when it arrived it tasted like diet. I couldn’t see straight, I couldn’t walk without assistance, I blacked out for a period of time, a lot of vomiting. I had stopped drinking maybe and hour or more earlier, had a decent meal before drinking, was well rested, and I had a moderate amount to drink. I’ve NEVER had the same reaction before or since. There would not have been ANY way for me to defend myself if someone had wanted to do something to me. I was helpless.”
“I was about 6 years ago at a bar I always went too. By my house. I left my beer at a table with people I kind of knew to use the restroom. I had 1 beer and ordered food. I could not walk. I could not speak. I’m not sure if I grabbed the wrong beer or if someone was trying to target me or play a prank. Thankfully some real friends saw I was hunched over in a chair and carried me out. They kept me awake all night and thought they should have taken me to the hospital. When I went back to that bar I was called a junkie and my boyfriend at the time broke up with me believing the rumors. Things could have ended a lot worse. Thankfully a male and female friend watched over me all night. It’s sad but it is something that can happen. I now bring my drink with me even into the stall.”
The list goes on and on…. this was just in one day of asking.
Segment 1. I’m amazed by those who think that denying what is true will somehow change the fact it is.
You can deny this all you want – but it’s happening. It has probably even escalated since the Bill Cosby story broke. The creeps thought “ oh so that is how I can get laid”.
COMMONLY USED DRUGS:
- ECSTASY: Lasts 3-6 hours. High doses of MDMA can affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature. This can lead to a spike in body temperature that can occasionally result in liver, kidney, or heart failure or even death.
- Rohypnol It’s legal in Mexico, Europe, – it is not manufactured or legal in the USA. It can be detected for up to 60-75 hours with a urine test.Rohypnol (roofies, forget pill, circles mind erasers, Mexican Valium). Some rohypnol is now colored. Some drinks may turn blue, but do not use that as a standing rule. As of 2016, blood tests can identify flunitrazepam at concentrations of as low as 4 ng/ml; the elimination half life of the drug is 11–25 hours. For urine samples, metabolites can be identified 60 hours to 28 days, depending on the dose and analytical method used. Hair and saliva can also be analyzed; hair is useful when a long time has transpired since ingestion, and saliva for workplace drug tests.
- GHB – only stays in system for a few hours. GHB (cherry meth, bedtime scoop, G, G-Juice, Gamma 10, Liquid E, Liquid Ecstasy). GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is marketed as Xyrem for the treatment of narcolepsy.
- Ketamine (Special K) is an anesthetic that is used in humans and animals.
Not every situation is completely unavoidable. To help you stay safe:
- Do not accept drinks from other people and do not accept opened drinks.
- Do not leave your drink unattended.
- If something does not seem right, do not drink it.
- Be clear about your expectations.
- If possible, go out with a buddy or a group of friends.
- Do not be afraid to say noor ask for help.
Segment 3. If you are assaulted, or feel like you may have been assaulted, seek help right away. Keep in mind the drugs are meant to impair your memory, so it is possible to not know right away if something happened to you. If you have been assaulted or suspect an assault:
- Get medical help right away. Call emergency medical services or have a friend take you to the emergency room, then contact the police.
- Ask for a urine test to see if a drug is in your body.
- Do not clean up where you think you were assaulted.
- Do not wash your clothes or yourself.
- Write down as much as you can remember about the person and your surroundings.
- Call a rape crisis center or other agency that can help you.
Rape is a crime no matter who assaulted you. It is physically and emotionally damaging. Take time to learn about rape resources in your area. Ask your doctor about counseling or guidance through the criminal process.
Most did not expect a date rape because they were with someone they believed they could trust. The best defense is to keep a level head. Arm yourself with knowledge before you go out, learn about your surroundings, and protect yourself from harm.
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM DR. NANCY:
If this does happen to you please know you are not alone. Don’t allow others to make you feel responsible. Drugging someone against their will has no excuse or reason – it’s a criminal, violent act of assault. People who do this are predators. The best we can do is to avoid being preyed upon as much as possible.
Segment 4. When traveling alone:
- Find a buddy you can agree to watch out for each other.
- Travel in a group if possible
- Avoid over drinking alcohol or using drugs. This places you at a much higher risk for assault.
- Keep some form of ID (even a business card) with you at all times.
- In your phone create an ICE person in your contact list (In Case of Emergency)
- Never leave a drink unattended or accept drinks from people you don’t intimately know and trust.
- Be mindful to drink water (sealed water bottles) between each alcoholic beverage. You’ll enjoy your vacation or party that much more.
